Expansion of the Cultural Infrastructure for Manhwa

Project Pbjective

  • To instill a greater understanding of the artistic and cultural value of manhwa and to promote the right of the people to enjoy culture, through the operation of 'Manhwa Gyujjanggak Museum' (Korea Manhwa Information Archives), a multi-purpose cultural space that combines 100 years of Korean manhwa content and the power of imagination.

Project Specifics

  • <Korea Comics Museum>
    • Presenting feature exhibitions (twice a year )
    • Developing and operating a hands-on, experiential training program
    • Running a screening room for 4D animation
    • Developing manhwa- and comics-related cultural merchandise and strengthening promotional marketing
  • <Comics Library >
    • Operating a general reading room, children's reading room, video viewing room, conservation and preservation area, and database production office
    • Developing patron services programs
    • Running a manhwa sharing project and supporting the Comic Box Project (installing small-scale manhwa bookshelves in areas of neglect, including public places, isolated areas in mountain regions,and facilities for the underprivileged, among others )
    • Soliciting donations from esteemed writers and from collectors in the general public

    • Operating an animation-only theater (400 seats) and a Manhwa art shop

Koean Manhwa Digital Archiving Project

Project Pbjective

  • To systematically preserve cultural assets and provide a database service to the nation by collecting manhwa materials and converting them into database format
  • To further the cultural and commercial value creation of Korean manhwa, through systematic online and offline manhwa archiving

Project Specifics

  • Establishing an archiving system for actual objects
    • Collecting and preserving materials, such as early manhwa, rare manhwa, modern published manhwa (individual volumes, magazines, theoretical monographs, and foreign material, among others)
    • Establishing a database of original early manhwa at the Korea Comics Museum
  • Establishing a manhwa information portal at kcomics.net
    • including an information service and the 'Digital Manhwa Gyujjanggak' (Korean Manhwa Information Archives) database Establishing a database featuring a comprehensive list of Korean manhwa (including a service to introduce upcoming manhwa by scheduled publication date, and to present new manhwa classified by genre and type)
    • Producing a Webzine with articles about Internet manhwa
  • Publishing research and data
    • Reissuing masterpieces of Korean manhwa (2 titles per year) recording oral histories of esteemed veteran manhwa artists (2 artists per year) publishing an annual Korean manhwa yearbook (1 time per year), and issuing the Manhwa Gyujjanggak quarterly information series (4 times per year)
  • Establishing and operating a center for the preservation and utilization of original copies of manhwa

Creation and Operation of a Manhwa Theme Park

Project Pbjective

  • To optimize the tourism value of KOMACON (Korea Manhwa Contents Agency) by creating a unique theme park utilizing manhwa-related content

Project Specifics

  • Park location and size: The agency's open lawn plaza / 8,789㎡ (approximately 2,600 pyeong)
  • 2009-2010: Park used as a relaxation space for the people and as a KOMACON event space (BICOF, PISAF, and more)
  • 2011-2013: Manhwa theme park in development, integrating storytelling with figurative three-dimensional works depicting manhwa characters
